Weather and Climate
Hunter Valley weather and climate information.

The Hunter Valley weather is generally different to that of coastal areas of New South Wales on account of its inland location and proximity to mountains. With this come four distinct seasons, and while temperatures on a summer’s day may be higher than on the coast, it tends to get cooler at night as well as being drier.

Hunter Valley Summer

Summers are hot and go roughly from December to February. Daytime temperatures during this time are up into the 30s (°C), though it does drop off nicely at night. While summers are exciting due to the harvest and general bustle, bear in mind that it is also the wettest time in Hunter Valley.

Hunter Valley Autumn

Autumn goes from March to May and is a few degrees cooler and also a fair bit drier. The springtime is similar both for rainfall and temperatures, while the June to August winter sees pleasant days of around 18 to 20°C. Temperatures do drop quite a lot at night, though, sometimes as low as 5°C, so be sure to pack a jacket.

The autumn is one of the best times to be here, after the harvest. There are fewer people, meaning cheaper hotels, and it is not as hot as the previous months. The hues of the green, orange and brown landscape after the rains are also enchanting and definitely a plus for romancing couples.

Hunter Valley Spring

The vines re-sprout again in the spring and there is green all around. This is a good time in the Hunter Valley’s weather/climate to take advantage of the fresh air and lower tourist numbers, when you might even get to catch wallabies or kangaroos mooching around the vineyards.

Note: be aware that temperatures up in the Barrington Tops National Park can be bracing in the winter as these are some of the highest mountains in the region.
